Storyboard -

You should all know this by now if you have been following my blog! if not go….here. A storyboard is a visual and sometimes verbal representation of an inspiration to communicate a desired end result.

Fashion Editorial Shoot -

A fashion editorial features 3 or more outfit changes with pieces from various designers and normally takes up 6-12 pages. Hair, Make-up and location may or may not be changed during the shoot.

Beauty Editorial Shoot -

A beauty editorial is usually shot in a tight crop or max 3/4 shot of the model. Wardrobe may or may not be changed but either the hair, make-up or both are changed in each final image. Typically shot in a studio.

Lookbook -

A lookbook is when a designer or brand wants to showcase a “pre-catalog” of their collection to shop around to buyers. Many times this lookbook will also be used for web imagery or catalog.

Advertising -

Imagery targeted to sell an object or idea.

Catalog

A catalog shoot will normally have 1 hair and make-up look and feature the entire open stock of a brand. Typically shot in a studio.

Tests-

TF - Trade For…in this case anything the “booker” has offered!

TFP- TFP usually refers to trade for print – meaning you are trading you unpaid time for printed images – make sure to clarify what this means exactly to the collaborators. Are you testing for images that will be printed in potential magazines or testing for images the photographer will bring for your book (make sure to require a digital copy either way)

TFCD- Trade for CD happens less now but typically means you will not get a tear or even a printed image but you will br trading your time for a digital file from the shoot.

Tears-

Refers to “printed” material such as an editorial, advert page…anything that can be “torn” out of a magazine.

Press/exposure

This usually refers to fashion shows and special events. The event or shoot promises a high return in publicity in exchange for complimentary work. Make sure to clarify the parameters of the press and the task at hand

Webitorials/blogs/social media

This is work targeting for online use…a great way to build your fan base!

Day rate-

The amount you are expecting to be paid for a day of work, remember they will 1099 you so figure out your rate and add the taxes you will later pay…that is what you should charge

Half-day rate-

Slightly more than half of what is listed about.

Kit Fee-

Essential for make-up artists – a kit fee is a fee charged on top of your day rate for the use of your equipment.

Per look rate-

For certain occasions it is helpful to develop a rate that is based on each look you do with a clear stipulation that you do not stay for touch ups.

MUA-

Stylist-

the wardrobe styled may refer to themselves as the fashion stylist and/or wardrobe stylist – they are not necessarily the designer!

Taken directly from todays The Daily Love e-mail. One of the most amazing things I have read in a while…

Rule One - You will receive a body. Whether you love it or hate it, it’s yours for life, so accept it. What counts is what’s inside.

Rule Two - You will be presented with lessons. Life is a constant learning experience, which every day provides opportunities for you to learn more. These lessons are specific to you, and learning them ‘is the key to discovering and fulfilling the meaning and relevance of your own life’.

Rule Three - There are no mistakes, only lessons. Your development towards wisdom is a process of experimentation, trial and error, so it’s inevitable things will not always go to plan or turn out how you’d want. Compassion is the remedy for harsh judgment – of ourselves and others. Forgiveness is not only divine – it’s also ‘the act of erasing an emotional debt’. Behaving ethically, with integrity, and with humour – especially the ability to laugh at yourself and your own mishaps – are central to the perspective that ‘mistakes’ are simply lessons we must learn.

Rule Four - The lesson is repeated until learned. Lessons repeat until learned. What manifest as problems and challenges, irritations and frustrations are more lessons – they will repeat until you see them as such and learn from them. Your own awareness and your ability to change are requisites of executing this rule. Also fundamental is the acceptance that you are not a victim of fate or circumstance – ‘causality’ must be acknowledged; that is to say: things happen to you because of how you are and what you do. To blame anyone or anything else for your misfortunes is an escape and a denial; you yourself are responsible for you, and what happens to you. Patience is required – change doesn’t happen overnight, so give change time to happen.

Rule Five - Learning does not end. While you are alive there are always lessons to be learned. Surrender to the ‘rhythm of life’, don’t struggle against it. Commit to the process of constant learning and change – be humble enough to always acknowledge your own weaknesses, and be flexible enough to adapt from what you may be accustomed to, because rigidity will deny you the freedom of new possibilities.

Rule Six - “There” is no better than “here”. The other side of the hill may be greener than your own, but being there is not the key to endless happiness. Be grateful for and enjoy what you have, and where you are on your journey. Appreciate the abundance of what’s good in your life, rather than measure and amass things that do not actually lead to happiness. Living in the present helps you attain peace.

Rule Seven - Others are only mirrors of you. You love or hate something about another person according to what love or hate about yourself. Be tolerant; accept others as they are, and strive for clarity of self-awareness; strive to truly understand and have an objective perception of your own self, your thoughts and feelings. Negative experiences are opportunities to heal the wounds that you carry. Support others, and by doing so you support yourself. Where you are unable to support others it is a sign that you are not adequately attending to your own needs.

Rule Eight - What you make of your life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. Take responsibility for yourself. Learn to let go when you cannot change things. Don’t get angry about things – bitter memories clutter your mind. Courage resides in all of us – use it when you need to do what’s right for you. We all possess a strong natural power and adventurous spirit, which you should draw on to embrace what lies ahead.

Rule Nine - Your answers lie inside of you. Trust your instincts and your innermost feelings, whether you hear them as a little voice or a flash of inspiration. Listen to feelings as well as sounds. Look, listen, and trust. Draw on your natural inspiration.

Rule Ten - You will forget all this at birth. We are all born with all of these capabilities – our early experiences lead us into a physical world, away from our spiritual selves, so that we become doubtful, cynical and lacking belief and confidence. The ten Rules are not commandments, they are universal truths that apply to us all. When you lose your way, call upon them. Have faith in the strength of your spirit. Aspire to be wise – wisdom the ultimate path of your life, and it knows no limits other than those you impose on yourself.

So I realize that I have been gone for quite a bit however when you hear why I am sure you will not blame me! I have had the opportunity to team up with an amazing project that will put the beauty and fashion industry on its tip toes with the anticipation of perfection called The Mastery.

I feel truly blessed to have been asked to come and participate in something that I feel truly exemplifies what our industry can be, should be and was meant to be. The Mastery’s beauty program is lead by Lucie Doughty and the business side is lead by Arlene Lyons. Over the last few weeks I aided in The Mastery’s grand opening withThe Mastery’s Design Leader Jamie Anderberry and of course co-owner and creative director Lucie Doughty – who is also the Editorial Director for Paul Mitchell - Lucie is not only my mentor but where I got my own personal master training directly from at the beginning of my career. The event was covered not only by local press but also featured by Modern Salon…did I mention attendees included Robert Cromeans, John Paul Dejoria and Tabatha Coffey?

The designers are put through a rigorous 14 week course which can be best compared to a hair boot camp. Near their culmination they are presented with the task of creating a look for a shoot which will be a collective representation of the classes time at The Mastery and soon after they take the reins and come together to create a fashion show for the grand finale of their training.

Today as WordPress does its job and posts this I will be working with the first class of 7 designers to complete their training from The Mastery. wash-prep-dry-prep-curl-set-dress-repeat is our mantra for the day as we go over looks for their grand finale and nothing is stopping these 7 from achieving mastery.

I have missed by bohemian beauties SO much! I have been having an amazing time between Los Angeles and now Altanta however all of this amazingness has not left me with ample time to post. I like my entries to be meaningful so I have worked today q-ing up some fantastic reads, images and inspriational tid bits for you all! Boarding my flight in about 2 hrs and 30 min! Suitcases are packed (here is to hoping they meet weight requirments :/). Snack has been prepared by mom. Ipod is loading. Magazines galore will be picked up in Munich during my layover (Genova’s Christopher Columbus airport is not exactly mainstream).

It has been a full year since my last trip back to L.A. and I can’t wait! I will be making stops in Atlanta as well as Vegas…possibly Chicago and NY!

LA often gets spoken badly about, but it is all jealousy or choosing not to look beyond the surface. It is an amazing city with its own history and just like any good city…keeps its gems a secret for the worthy

I wanted to share some more behind the scene images with you all from my 3 day shooting marathon in Milan with Florence based photographer Sara Mautone, MUA Marina Bernacchioni and Wardrobr stylist/artist Irene Ghillani. Models where provided by Why Not? Models as well as Women.

The three shoots where all very different from girly to kitch narrative to high fashion. Can’t wait to see these editorials in print!

Sorry if the inbed does not work! However please click on the link and listen to this talk. Moving outside of Los Angeles made me realize the work we still have to do as women. I grew up in a happy bubble where women grew up with the blief system that they had the ability to do anything and everything. I am every greatful for my upbringing and women should be able to choose their future and find power in it, no matter what their goal. Feminism should not be a bad word.

The original drawings inspired me from a general stylistic point of view and I wanted to expand on that. While flipping through my 10 kilo inspiration file and my whoknowshowmany mb inspiration folder as well as trendhunter and other helping websites I more or less came up with…

This image as my main “real life” inspiration image. I like the business of her wardrobe and the portrait like quality not to mention the makeup. The hair is a nice twist on the colorful locks we wee everywhere. Messy and a little grundge but in enough in harmony with the colors around them.

I love these images from an editorial in Numero Magazine for their styling and started opting for an overload of bijoux ethnic jewlery instead of vintage frocks to create a different vibe and to evolve the inspiration images. I also loved that her hair was untamed and that her poses were slightly more agressive.

next came some amazing make-up sketches by the MUA who joined in on our inspiration board Anna Olivieri.

we paired up with Laura Sciunnach Bijoux to make our tribal styling come to life and began to add images of their collections to our story board to help evolve our looks.

Our story evolved and our fotographer began to play with ideas of colored gel lights, blur effects and a darker setting like the one above.

So, as you can see, an original inpsiration does not have to lead to a carbon copy reproduction. We simply take hints of things that inspire us and then use a story board to communicate where that inspiration comes from and how it evolved for us. Then the amazing aspect of collaboration comes in and we see the story develop into something new!
